And So It Begins...

I had several questions about the translation process, but I figured some of them might sort themselves out if I just dove in and gave it a try. I had to start somewhere, so I started on season 1, episode 1. (Seemed logical at the time).

Which Sections to Translate

I'm not sure which sections ought to be translated over. All of them? (Analysis? Noteworthy dialogue? Questions?) I guess ideally all sections would be, but I was worried that the dialogue that we would translate from our English version might differ from the Spanish closed captioning.

On linking to other Articles

I was confused as to how to link to other articles. At present I just linked to the English versions of the article, piping in the best attempt at what I would think the Spanish article would be. I guess ideally you'd link to whichever translated articles were available (presently, 0).

Amusing Translations

I translated "starliner" to "transatlántico de estrellas". Apparently transatlántico means "Ocean liner", so it's sort of "Ocean liner of stars". I'm betting a native speaker could provide something better.

I translated it as Transatlántico espacial (Space Ocean liner). Seems like a good translation to me.. I could be wrong, though. --Axelsino 15:43 24 jul 2006 (CDT)

Templates

The templates stick out as being untranslated, so I may set about creating a spanish version of some of them and linking to them. I might end up with some more "star oceanliners" but at least the wiki-structure would be in place for those who can translate better than I.

Categories

I wasn't sure if I ought to go ahead and put categories on here, as they will show up in the main category listings. My hope, however, is that the es: (or whichever) prefix might help distinguish the translated pages, and might help give them more visibility.

Ship name Articles

I tried maintaing the convention of using feminine pronouns, etc, when dealing with the ship names. I'm not sure how well that translates, or if that should be determined as a standard/convention for each language individually.

I guess that's all for now. Feel free to jump in to edit/correct/add where necessary (I'm thinking this could use a lot of help). --Steelviper 16:48, 23 January 2006 (EST)

¿Qué la cogida?

¡Mierda santa! ¡No puedo leer lo que estoy viendo!

(OK, just kidding...having too much fun with Babel Fish translation) --Spencerian 16:51, 23 January 2006 (EST)

Actually I relied heavily on Babelfish to do a lot of the raw translating. My vocab skills aren't what they once were. However, the value added of a human is recognizing where English idioms (or just a literal translation) are getting in the way, and finding a way around that. I guess I should try babelfish on the final product (but I'd rather be reviewed by a native speaker). --Steelviper 16:55, 23 January 2006 (EST)
That is precisely what I am trying to do... I am a native Spanish speaker and have lived in the US for quite a number of years. I like that you (Steelviper) started with a direct translation from english. I can then go back to the original english and identify the idioms and the sense of what was being conveyed. --Axelsino 14:53 24 jul 2006 (CDT)
